These lizards can grow up to 5ft in length although they average 2 – 2.5 ft.
In the wild they are found in sub – Saharan Africa. They can be found on the ground
in burrows or low bushes and trees.
They have a powerful jaw that can crack through the shells of snails, they feed
on a variety of invertebrates including millipedes and scorpions as well as eggs,
small mammals, amphibians and rodents. Darwin especially likes eggs, mice and snails.
When under threat the monitor will hiss and thrash its thick muscular tail towards
potential predators. This is known as tail whipping and can deliver a painful blow.
Darwin can be a little grumpy at first and is a bit of a wriggler so he prefers
to be stroked rather than passed around and held by lots of people. He is best for
educational sessions or parties for older children and adults.
