There are hundreds of breeds of chickens. Elvis is a Polish Cockerel which is a
breed of chicken. He has a crest of floppy feathers on the top of his head. Barnie
is a Double Laced Barnevelder hen and has lovely markings on her feathers.
Chickens are one of the most common and widespread domestic animals which have
been kept since before the 5th Century BC. In 2003 there were more than 24 billion
chickens being kept.
Chickens will eat corn, plants, insects and specially made layers pellets containing
all the nutrients needed for good egg production.
Males like Elvis are known as Roosters or Cockerels whilst females like Barnie are
referred to as hens, pullets or chooks.
Hens lay eggs even if there is no cockerel around. The cockerel is well known for
its loud crowing noise. They live in groups called a flock and the cockerels guard
the hens from predators.
