Red Footed Tortoises come from northern South America from the outskirts of forests
to savannahs around the Amazon Basin.
They have been known to grow to 50 cm although an average adult is around 30 -35
cm. The largest ever discovered was in Paraguay measuring 60cm and weighing just
The darker pigmentation on their shells allows them to absorb more sunlight.
Unlike most tortoises they are omnivorous. Their diet consists of a wide range of
fruits, grasses, fungi and flowers but they also eat carrion and small invertebrates.
Redford loves purple lettuce leaves and sharon fruit as well as the occasional bit
of chicken or prawn.
These tortoises like to shelter in disused animal burrows and will often rest in
water or mud with just their eyes and nostrils exposed.
