The Red Fox is the largest species of fox and can be found spread across the whole
northern hemisphere. It has also been introduced to Australia by humans and can easily
adapt to new surroundings.
In the wild they usually eat small rodents although they will also take rabbits,
birds, insects, snails, and reptiles. They also consume eggs, fruits and vegetables.
Todd particularly likes liver, tripe, lamb and pears.
Foxes are very agile and can jump walls and fences over 2 metres high. Todd enjoys
jumping on the various platforms within his enclosure.
Foxes are great hunters and have binocular vision which reacts to movement. Their
sense of smell is good and their hearing is very acute allowing them to hear a mouse
squeak from around 100 metres away. Unfortunately Todd had an accident during his
birth which left him deaf, he has managed to adapt really well to his lack of hearing
and gets along just fine.
Foxes are naturally skittish animals and Todd has had a bit of an unsettled start
to life. He was born in captivity and I am his 3rd owner, he was given to me at around
4 months old. It has taken him a few months to trust me and now we have a good bond.
He goes on walks and meets strangers regularly and is beginning to trust others.
He can currently come to venues with enough space that he is not crowded and with
no young children as he could be easily scared. He is continuously growing more confident
and should be ready for a wider variety of encounters soon.
